Theme of the conference
Our environment is deteriorating rapidly owing to increased population and urbanization combined with increased economic prosperity. The concomitant increased use of chemicals in agriculture, industry and household products and their regulation is a major challenge faced by the country. There is also an urgent need to bridge the gap between the work of researchers, industrialists and regulatory agencies for sustainable Chemical Management in Sri Lanka. As a signatory to various Chemical conventions on hazardous chemicals and their disposal, their effective implementation requires a coordinated effort on the part of researchers and regulatory bodies. This symposium will focus on
(i) Present status and emerging challenges to the Environment in Sri Lanka owing to improper chemical management
(ii) Evaluation of the strengths and weaknesses of the present regulatory frameworks for a sustainable environment.
(iii) Mitigatory and interventional actions required for a sustainable environment.
Technical sessions of this symposium shall focus on
(i) Water quality: contamination with pesticides, heavy metals such as mercury and persistent organic pollutants
(ii) Air quality: Persistent organic pollutants in the atmosphere, dioxins, furans, polyaromatic hydrocarbons, air quality trends and their effects on health.
(iii) Solid waste management: sanitary landfills, hazardous waste management and industrial pollution control. Waste as a resource: compost for agriculture, power generation, recovery of precious metals.
This symposium will have presentations by scientists and policymakers who have extensive knowledge in their respective fields. In addition, several panel discussions are planned so as to identify gaps in research and deficiencies of regulatory control.
Opportunities are also available for scientists and postgraduates students to make short research presentations in the above areas.
